-=[ Installation ]=-
Normally, TMS should be installed in a directory on C: called
C:\TMS. It can be installed in a different directory or drive
if you set the variable TMS to that directory. Let's say you
want to install TMS on your D: drive in a directory named
\MENU... Add the following lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
SET TMS=D:\MENU
PATH=D:\MENU
If you don't set TMS to the directory, it will look for it's
files in C:\TMS.
These files are in TMS40.ZIP:
TMS.DOC This documentation file
TMS.EXE The main program
Copy these files to the directory you will be using, (i.e.,
C:\TMS). You should add TMS to the end of your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Use EDLIN or your word processor to modify or create this
file (If you use a word processor be sure to save it as an
ASCII file).
A sample AUTOEXEC.BAT would be:
ECHO OFF
DATE
TIME
PATH = C:\TMS
PROMPT $P$G
TMS
Be sure AUTOEXEC.BAT is in the root directory of your hard
drive. By adding TMS's directory to your path, when you are
in DOS you won't have to change to the menu directory before
typing TMS.
-=[ Running TMS ]=-
Type TMS to start the program. If you're running TMS Version
4 for the first time, it will say "TMS cannot find it's data
files". Pressing F1 will give you a help screen. Press F2 to
create/convert data files. If you're upgrading from a prev-
ious version of TMS or Master Menu, TMS should show the old
files DATA.CFG and DATA.OPT. If it doesn't, press ESC to go
to DOS and make sure the new version of TMS.EXE is in the
same directory with the old files and run TMS again. Delete
TMS.BAT or MENU.BAT if present. If TMS cannot find it's data
files after you've installed it, press ESC for DOS and change
to the directory TMS is installed. This cannot happen if TMS
is installed properly (see Installation, above).
The menu consists of 5 pages, numbered from 1 to 5, each
page 2
with 26 selections, designated from A to Z. To change pages,
press the number of the page desired, or:
TAB, PgDn, or DOWN ARROW will advance to next page.
Shift/TAB, PgUp, or UP ARROW will go back one page.
SPACE will toggle the F-Key line on/off at the bottom
of the screen (see F9 - Changing defaults below).
If you have a Microsoft or compatible mouse you can click the
left button on the page name on the right side of the screen.
To execute a selection, either type the letter, or click the
left mouse button on the selection.
-=[ Function Keys ]=-
These functions can executed either by pressing the appro-
priate F-key, or by pressing the left mouse button on the
selection at the bottom of the screen, or by clicking the
left mouse button in the area listed below. A short help
message will appear on the bottom of the screen. Pressing
ESC will abort the function and return to the menu.
F1 - Help Screen (or click the right mouse button)
This brings up a quick reference to the function keys, as
well as a blatant appeal for you to register your copy. The
F-keys can be executed from this menu in this version.
F2 - Edit Menu
This allows you to add menu selections, edit selections al-
ready on the menu, and now you can move selections. If you
are using a master password, it must be entered before pro-
ceeding. It will ask "Selection to edit", or F2 to move a
selection. I'll explain moving below. To add or edit a sel-
ection, either type the letter of the selection, or click the
left mouse button on the selection. If you choose a select-
ion with a password, it also must be entered. The following
info can be entered for each selection:
Description: 18 characters
The description to appear on the menu
Drive: 1 character (defaults to the TMS drive)
The drive the selection's program is on
Directory: 19 characters
The directory the selection's program is in
page 3
Prompt for additional input: 2 lines, 30 characters each
You can have TMS ask for additional input
before it runs a selection. Let's say your
installing a word processor such as Word
Perfect. You could set the first prompt to
ask "File to edit?". You would then use %1
in your batch file to insert the user's
response. For WordPerfect your line would
be: WP %1
WordPerfect will now load the file requested
on start-up.
Lines: 7 lines, 50 characters each
These are the batch file lines that will
run the selection.
NOTE: If you call another batch file from
this, the lines after the other batch file
will not execute. MS-DOS allows only 1 batch
file to run at a time. If you call another
batch file, you will need to add TMS to the
end of it so you will return to the menu after
it runs. For more detail, read Problems below.
Editing Commands:
The Up/Down arrow keys or ENTER will move the prior/next
field, and keep any changes. TAB/Shift-TAB or PgDn/PgUp will
also move to the prior/
